New Blood Pressure Guidelines

High blood pressure should be addressed earlier based on new guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association for detecting and managing high blood pressure.

The guidelines eliminate the category of prehypertension, categorizing patients as having either “elevated blood pressure” or “stage I hypertension”. Under previous guidelines 140/90 mm Hg was classified as stage I hypertension, but under the new guidelines this level is classified as stage 2 hypertension.
